Racial marking or disparity is based on the bodies which are the social constructs of establishing differences among human beings. Magazine photography and films have begun targeting Latino audiences of diverse ethnicity, sex, and social class (LUGO-LUGO, 2015). Movies featuring Latina protagonists have always been incredibly successful with their diverse audiences including the Latina. Some representation of Latina artists adapts to the prevailing thin resonant epitome, while others reveal the women’s curvy shapes, which is precisely cherished in Latina culture (Haslanger, 2000). This intricacy is vivid in these representations of mainstream Latina celebrities such as Jenifer Lopez. Movies featuring Latina protagonists depict a double femininity edifice and otherness.  The representation of Jenifer Lopez’s body is racially marked with marginalization with regard to the prevailing whiteness construction. Just to recap, Latinos such as Jenifer Lopez are typically undervalued, and feminized and are placed past socially admissible limits of beauty and femininity. Latina photography representation depicts Latina identity and emphasizes their curvy figures. Therefore, in this paper, I will analyze Jenifer Lopez’s photograph for a magazine so as to determine the alternative representation of the Latina female body in photography in magazines.

Jenifer Lopez’s photograph for a paper magazine of the Hollywood life magazine was taken to be for a cover page of the magazine. The photograph is taken as she looks sexy, half-naked and seems to be inviting. Her physical beauty is vividly portrayed in the photograph. The image depicts the passion and intent for manipulation that the producer or author of the magazine intends to create for its audience (medina, 2017). Stereotypes are presented here in a coded form by her dressing code, her posture, and the behaviour that she seems to possess. Essentially, the gender of the writer is significantly important since the writer might tend to be biased. Suppose the writer of the magazine is a male he might tend to create more stereotyping aspects against the female artist, Jenifer Lopez. The male writer will tend to portray male superiority over females in the photography by emphasizing some body parts. A female writer may as well tend to depict more femininity (Martynuska, 2016). As well, the gender of the artist being portrayed in the photograph affects the message being depicted. The bodies of males differ from those of females. Females, have a curvy figure just like Jenifer Lopez is while males have a masculine body, therefore, gender matters with regard to the representation of racially marked bodies. Race as well matters a lot. Each race is believed or characterized by certain body marks. For instance, the blacks are depicted to have fat bodies while Latinas are depicted to have sexy and curvy bodies which are seductive and sexually appealing.

In this photograph, Jenifer Lopez is allowed to have an identity. Her name is mentioned and recognized. Despite being recognized she has not empowered instead her Latina body in the photograph has been oversexed and also portrayed as sexually available; this is evident from her emphasized seductive clothing, gorgeous breasts, curvy hips, long hair and extravagant jewellery of earrings and rings on her fingers. Surprisingly, by look, she seems to be in control of her sexuality. She poses comfortably for the photograph with one hand on her breast and the other on her thighs (medina, 2017). She looks confident and wants to look sexy which will look appealing in the magazine. I find that she is been granted the opportunity to be the subject rather than an object because she has been given identity and as well as in control of her sexuality. This suggests that she is not being used. In Jenifer Lopez’s photograph, I note that her Latina body is racially represented with beauty and sexuality which is considered desirable. Apparently, Lopez’s body representation is racially marked precisely emphasizing the breasts, buttocks, and hips to suggest sexual craving and fertility (Paccione, n.d.). Her Latina body has been extensively represented as exotic in the United States culture whereby whiteness is attributed to an incorporeal intellectual culture free from day to day needs for consumption of food, excretion of waste, and sexual reproduction.

In the photograph, Jenifer Lopez is sexualized. She is symbolized as a sex goddess. This is vividly tropicalization. I note that Jenifer Lopez possesses an exotic otherness which has attracted the writer to use her photograph in the magazine (medina, 2017). In essence, her exoticness differs from the Anglo-Saxon norm. She has fair skin that enables her to facilitate her ethnic mobility which gives her the advantage to represent both the Latina and the whites, unlike the blacks who lack access. Her sexy Latina body is as well depicted as dangerous by her fierce looks. Her eyes, lips, buttocks, and breasts have been greatly emphasized to bring out the epitome of beauty by marketing the well-shaped, feminine or outer beauty.

With regards to social class, Jenifer Lopez has been portrayed to be from a wealthy social class. I find the expensive clothing and jewellery she puts on to be suggesting that she is from the rich social class. The quality of the photograph and the flashy background the photograph show that expensive and high-quality instruments were used thus suggesting that she is from a rich social class (medina, 2017). Moreover, I can tell from her eyes that she has power. The sharp and confident eyesight she gives suggests she has power and authority and seems to be in control. Her body language speaks of power and authority. She has leaned forward which suggests that she is the one in charge; she is the one to make final decisions. With regards to power, her pose holding her breast with one hand while giving a fierce look represents her being dangerous (medina, 2017). The agency of the image is to depict the inter-subjectivity among racially marked desired Latina bodies together with the other white.

However, in majorly, of popular cultures across the world have a tendency of homogenizing the construction of Latina ethnicity, while disregarding the original Latina actresses’ origin (Martynuska, 2016). This photograph portrays the history and culture of the Latina with a diverse pan-ethnic background.  Latina body hybrid identity emerges out of its trans-cultural and trans-national interchanges among diverse community members. Apparently, Latinas are there between the white skin complexion and the black skin complexion. This is evident by her fair skin colour that an intermediate between the blacks and the whites. Historically, Latinas’ female bodies have always emphasized the buttocks, breasts, eyes and the curvy figure of the female depicting sexual desire (Haslanger, 2000). In this photograph, this history has been incorporated but depicted in a different form. Instead of Lopez’s eyes in the image portraying a desire for sex, her eyes look fierce depicting that she is dangerous. Jenifer Lopez’s eyes portray some kind of vengeance and bitterness. Culturally, the curvy shape of a female’s body has to be visible for appreciation (Paccione, n.d.). In this photograph, Jenifer Lopez has worn sexy clothing but instead knelt down her curvy body failing to be portrayed clearly. Here, the culture of showing off the female’s curvy body clearly for admiration was depicted but reclaimed differently.

To sum up, it is evident that Latina racial female marked bodies emphasize the physical body and sexuality. Actually, Lopez’s body representation is racially marked precisely emphasizing the breasts, buttocks and hips to suggest sexual craving and fertility. The representation of Jenifer Lopez’s Latina body is racially marked by marginalization with regard to the prevailing whiteness construction. Latinos are typically undervalued, feminized and placed past socially admissible limits of beauty and femininity. Jenifer Lopez’s exoticness and otherness portray how Latina’s bodies are uniquely marked and recognized. Moreover, the Latina female marked bodies are depicted through power, social class and agency so as to portray the inter-subjectivity among racially marked desired Latina bodies together with the other white. Also, with regards to the history and culture of the Latinas, Latina female bodies have always emphasized the buttocks, breasts, eyes and the curvy figure of the female depicting sexual desire. In Jenifer Lopez’s photograph, this history and culture have been incorporated but depicted in a different form. Portraying females’ body curves and other body parts for sensation and sexual desire have however been opened up but instead reclaimed differently. Therefore, Jenifer Lopez’s photo is the most ideal representation of racially marked Latino female bodies.
